Welcome to hoopsDB!!

 

Advanced stats are great for modern basketball and we see them used more regularly as we watch games from the USA. They are useful to help explain different aspects of the games on TV and NBA League Pass, and we have developed an understanding of things like Pace, Offensive rating and Turnover percentage.

But, where are these stats for Australian basketball? Why are Australian TV commentators still using points per game to compare team offenses and defenses? Where can Australian coaches, players, media and fans find the numbers to help explain OUR leagues?

 

Mission

 

The goal at hoopsDB is to provide statistics that improve the quality of basketball in Australia. To provide statistics that help to explain OUR leagues for coaches, players, media and fans.

 

The story

 

Late in 2012, sitting with coaching friends in the Court 1 stands at Nunawading Basketball Stadium, we were discussing the value of shot selection, particularly the corner 3. All the data we had from the US suggested that the corner 3 was the shot our teams should hunt for more often - shorter shot, higher value, harder to defend, easier to make. We had all heard the commentary when we watched games, and in most leagues it is the most efficient jump shot. But a question hung in the back of my mind..."What about volume? How many shots are actually taken from the corners? And is it actually the most efficient shot in OUR league?"

 

None of our leagues are the NBA or NCAA, so it doesn't make sense to use their findings as absolutes when trying to explain OUR leagues. Coaches need to talk the right language. We also need to improve the understanding that players, media and fans have around the statistics - statistics that go beyond the basic box score and have been recorded at hundreds of games across Australia each weekend for over 15 years, yet have largely been ignored by everyone involved.

 

At hoopsDB, those stats are collected from the LiveStats for each game and combined so that trends and patterns can be observed and can then be used to develop understanding and take the game to greater heights.

GLOSSARY

 

Stats are collected from the LiveStats page for each game. All stats are regular season only, except Australian National Junior Championships which display all games from each tournament.

All stats are subject to the accuracy of the statisticians recording the games. No stats have been altered. If the game video shows something different from the stats shown here, that would be an error made during the game and cannot be adjusted. If the league has recorded the stats after the game, it might be hit-and-miss as to whether I have the new or old stats.

However, it is important that names are recorded correctly so that totals are calculated correctly. Therefore, it is a regular occurrence to correct names that are misspelled. Since I cannot manually check every box score, if any names are recorded incorrectly, please contact me and I will make the adjustment.

Defensive stats are the same as those listed above but are preceded with "Opp". For example, a team's defensive FG% is their OppFG%

Win/Loss

Stats are grouped by games won and games lost

Home/Away

Stats are grouped by games played at home and games played away

Per 32 Mins

Stats are adjusted to 32 minutes per game of playing time and have "32" following the stat. For example, a player's points per game scaled to 32 minutes of playing time is PPG32

FGM - Field goals made

FGA - Field goals attempted

FG% - Field goal percentage

2PM - Two pointers made

2PA - Two pointers attempted

2P% - Two point percentage

3PM - Three pointers made

3PA - Three pointers attempted

3P% - Three point percentage

2PAr% - Two point attempt rate - The number of 2P attempts per 100 field goal attempts

2PAr% = 100 * 2PA / FGA

3PAr% - Three point attempt rate - The number of 3P attempts per 100 field goal attempts

3PAr% = 100 * 3PA / FGA

eFG% - Effective field goal percentage - Includes the effect of the 3P shot

eFG% = 100 * (FGM + 0.5 * 3PM) / FGA

Defense

Defensive stats are the same as those listed above but are preceded with "Opp". For example, a team's defensive FG% is their OppFG%

Shooting Zones

The half court is broken into 12 zones and totals are recorded for each zone.

A circle with a radius of 8 feet is used for the Deep Paint zone. This just touches the key lines on each side.

Middle areas use the extended key lines as their boundaries with the wings.

The boundary between the wing and corner is a horizontal line just above the 3P break which approximately divides the wing and corner areas into similar sized areas.

Range

Divides all shots into 2P shots 8 feet and closer, all other 2P shots (midrange) and all 3P shots

Shot Distances

It is worth noting that the FIBA 3P line has a distance of 6.75m (22.15 feet) at the arc and a minimum of 6.60m (21.65 feet) in the corners

Periods

Shooting stats are recorded by each regular and overtime period of the game

OffRTG - Offensive rating - Points scored per 100 possessions

OffRTG = 100 * PPG / Pace

DefRTG - Defensive rating - Points allowed per 100 possessions

DefRTG = 100 * OppPPG / Pace

NetRTG - Net rating - Difference between Offensive and Defensive rating

NetRTG = OffRTG - DefRTG

eFG% - Effective field goal percentage

TS% - True shooting percentage - Includes the effect of free throws

TS% = 50 * PPG / (FGA + 0.44 * FTA)

ORB% - Offensive rebounding percentage - The number of rebounds from 100 of own missed shots

ORB% = 100 * ORB / (ORB + OppDRB)

DRB% - Defensive rebounding percentage - The number of rebounds from 100 opposition missed shots

TOV% - Turnover percentage - The number of turnovers per 100 possessions

FTAr% - Free throw attempt rate - The number of free throws attempted per 100 field goal attempts

3PAr% - Three point attempt rate - The number of 3P attempts per 100 field goal attempts

3PAr% = 100 * 3PA / FGA

%PIP - Percentage points in paint - The percentage of total points that are scored inside the paint

%PIP = 100 * PIP / PPG

%PTO - Percentage points from turnovers - The percentage of total points that are scored following opponent turnovers

%2CP - Percentage points from second chances - The percentage of total points that are scored following offensive rebounds

TOV% - Turnover percentage - The number of turnovers per 100 possessions used by the player

USG = FGA + 0.44 * FTA + TOV

TOV% = 100 * TOV / (USG + AST)

USG% - Usage percentage - The number of possessions used by the player per 100 team possessions

TeamUSG = TeamFGA + 0.44 * TeamFTA + TeamTOV

USG% = 100 * USG * TeamMIN / (5 * MIN * TeamUSG)

GameSc - Game score - Created by John Hollinger as an estimate of player productivity. The scale is similar to that of points scored (40 is outstanding, 10 is average)

GameSc = PPG + 0.4 * FGM - 0.7 * FGA - 0.4 * (FTA - FTM) + 0.7 * ORB + 0.3 * DRB + STL + 0.7 * AST + 0.7 * BLK - 0.4 * FL - TOV
